However people are able to organize the form of a tree, they cannot organize life of it. Maybe they can destroy it. The appearing of leaves belongs to nature.

Seeing the lines I immediately had to think of Aart Klein with his graphic images. In his darkroom he tried to improve the contrast of his films using all technical means possible. All until to save lines and spaces. Going abstract like Klein, I remember the evolution of Piet Mondriaan. Both artists tried to move the figurative elements to the background.

DAY 050 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – TRIBUTE

A TRIBUTE TO HCB

Today I like to pay a just tribute to the late HCB, who inspired me again! All because I saw the interview on You Tube. ‘He is the greatest photographer of the 20th century’, according to Richard Avedon, who I admire too. I still hear HCB’s advice: ‘Don’t think, don’t search for the moment, because the moment will search you’. So, with that in mind, I went out this morning.

And lucky me, I found this guy doing his dangerous job. I like the geometrics HCB pointed to for several times. I like the clean edges too. As I enjoyed the experiment, I can state HCB to be right. Maybe you like it too. Unfortunately I had to crop the image a little bit and I am sorry for that.

In photography there are many voices. In this digital age my respect for the former film shooters has been growing day by day. I know voices telling you to do not wait for ‘the decisive moment’, but to work out a shoot. I think it’s easier because of going digital. Anyway I think the the subject finding you remains a wonderful starting point.

DAY 049 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – RHYTHM

RHYTHM

Even spring has her own rules, her own rhythm. Every year it surprises me. At first we see the yellow flowers passing by, to be followed by the white ones. Year after year there’s the same rhythm in the air. You may rely on it. Every year again. It’s about seasons I think. Anyway everybody has to follow his/her own rhythm in life. No directions at all. Maybe you can recognize some experiences of others. Proverbs to guide you perhaps. Maybe like the artist – during my 2015 visit of the Biennale at Venice – told me by a wallpainting:

in this living in time we are like the athlete

who in order to leap forwards must always take a step backwards

for if he can’t take a step backwards he can’t leap forwards

DAY 048 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – PASSION

Of course Easter time means the equivalent for Bach time. This afternoon I met – among other singers – Emanuèlle Redzaj. I only can find one word for their performance: passion! They sung works from Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Schubert and many other classic composers. Even the song ‘Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss’, composed by Frans Lehár was there.

The foundation Heart for Arts tries to introduce young artists by means of crowdfunding concerts. The foundation is to be found at Facebook. (meer…)

DAY 047 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – TOGETHER AGAIN

TOGETHER AGAIN

Sometimes life seems like a repetition of yesterday. The truth is it’s new whine at an other place to be. Today I enjoyed the beach with afterwards a glass of wine. Walking along the beach means getting mindful. You don’t have to think. Listening the waves is enough to fill the hours passing by. First walking against the wind and later on – when the wind was with us – thinking of what to do at the end. Ordering wine at the end is a efficacious medication to remove cold. Today, without any words, the cold wind instruct us to order that good old prescription. It worked out very well.

DAY 046 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – TOGETHER

TOGETHER

Sometimes it’s a good habit to finish the working day with a glass. However I did not work at all today, I found such a habit extremely relevant to it. Especially when your partner in crime shows her own interests for such a action.

At restaurant Opazzo in Rotterdam they know everything about wine. And of course about Italian food too. The place is well suited for relaxing at the end of the (working) day. During this small drink festival I found plenty of testing time to photograph with the aperture fully open. I liked to discover both circles.

DAY 045 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – CLOSE TO HOME

CLOSE TO HOME

Sometimes in photography it’s good to stay close to home. Travelling around can take some of your energy. To reload the own ‘battery’ close to home is a perfect place to be. Some weeks ago I started to follow a course in modeling. Last week I received one of my self made little vases glazed. And today – staying close to home – I like the yellow gypsophila in it. Pottery requires a steady hand and no doubt at all. Sometimes it is to compare to photography. Thinking about a shot means making one. Otherwise own regrets are waiting for you. And a return to the spot always includes a different light situation.

With Easter in mind I furthermore challenged my self to act like a baker’s trade. Contrary to photography I follow the rules for the best result possible. Today I think I survived both actions.

DAY 044 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – HAT

Every day is a new day. Normally, at the start of the day, I do not know what to photograph during the day. Today started the same way. At lunch in a small restaurant I saw this hat on a hall-stand. To me it seemed to be a little bit suspicious. A hat from the late thirties, may be. Entering for lunch I saw the other dressing of the location. There I met the books of the famous Sherlock Holmes. A nice opportunity to put both things together in a black and white expression. So I used my favorite Silver Efex Pro 2 and choose for a N+3 pushproces, of which I think it suites well for the magic of this old stuff. Anyway I love it.

DAY 043 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – TRI-X

TRI-X

For today I did not know who or what to photograph. The only thing I knew it had to be black and white on this gray day and had to contain an image based on the former grainy Kodak Tri-x film as I used before. Only a few hundred meters from home I saw this fence with the leading lines, which I pass by regularly. In my mind I saw a shallow depth of field. So I put my camera on F 1,4. Looking through te viewfinder I saw some cars and bikers from a distance. I looked for clean edges, then suddenly this lady with the white sheet in her hands came along. Within one hour I got my lucky shot for today and I’m happy with it.

DAY 042 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – NEW

NEW ROTTERDAM

At some places in Rotterdam everything is new. New sky-high buildings, new ventilation systems and new trees too. New forms all around you. I discovered that I most like the lines of the trees because of the natural view and the new leaves introducing spring in the middle of steel and reinforced concrete. They fulfill a wonderful job being vulnerable and producing oxygen in the middle of mass power

It has to be said that architects show their ultimate effort to rebuild the skyline of Rotterdam. Something to be proud of. Even in spring.

As always I got impressed by the new bridge De Zwaan (the swan), but in the distance I saw the oldest bridge of Rotterdam De Hef (the lifting bridge). As a boy a watched the sea-going vessels passing by. The pilots had a busy time in the fifties. The distance at both sides of the vessel being approximate one meter. I was astonished.
