DAY 061 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – DUTCH

FEELING DUTCH

Sometimes it’s easy to feel Dutch. Especially with windy weather at the seaside. That is so to say the former seaside. Nowadays it is called Het IJsselmeer and in former days De Zuiderzee.

In the harbour of Monnickendam, a little town at the seaside, I saw both flat-bottomed vessels including their sails folded. This sunny day brings everything alive: the wind, the clouds, the dikes. And just like me:

DAY 060 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – DIZZY

Glazen

DIZZY

I felt dizzy. No, I had not drunk yet. It’s all about the table-cover they had chosen for their party. I liked the pattern at first sight.

So the party was a great succes from beginning to the end.

The guests they love were full of energy to be part of this celebration concerning the 50th birthday-party.

It was spectacular from scratch off. Some of the guests saw each other again after several years and started to talk where they have ended in earlier days. Young and elder people mixed in a natural way. Colleagues and friends were present and mixed as if they knew each other for years.

A presentation by film of friends who could not be there, all with their own memories of the person celebrating his birthday.

As a photographer I stood aside and mainly under cover. It felt very special to have the possibility to be among all other guests.

DAY 059 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – STATUE

STATUE

According to my grandmother some items in life deserve a statue, which I like to do for today. I prepared this statue in black and white, because that’s what statues deserve too. Together with the passe-partout and the frame I like the shot with a little bit of sharpness.

Especially amid much festivity consumptions like this one are ordered by elderly people. And in Holland several branches are available during festive days. Together with whipping cream it is a delicacy (for elderly people).

DAY 058 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – KING’s DAY

KINGS DAY

Today our King celebrates his 50th birthday party. The country is full of activity. As in the day’s of his mother and of her mother too, people try to sell old stuff stored at their attic-floors during many years. They are exploring the streets – a self made market everywhere.

At some places real party tents appear of which I like the combination of their colors. And with some rain they are good shelters for photographers.

I congratulate our King and his family with his special birthday!

DAY 057 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – X-FACTOR

X-FACTOR

On my way to the exhibition of the photographs of the perfectionist Robert Mapplethorpe at De Kunsthal in Rotterdam, I discovered the X-factor. All the steps of the stairs are lightened by the morning sun. Only one step has a cross organized by a fence aside. A special step where I pointed at.

I don’t know the meaning of the X-factor is a correct appellation over here. If the other steps did not exist, I think this step would not be called special at all.

So a X-factor? I doubt it.

I think Robert Mapplethorpe had some X-factor during his lifetime. I enjoyed his photography, especially his portraits of people and flowers. Even nowadays I think his work is to be mentioned perfectly.

DAY 056 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – DESIGN

DESIGN

However not everybody loves design – I like the Scandinavian culture, including their designers. Today I received my new table and liked the reflected beam of light, right at the corner. To me design is a matter of the exactly positioned constuction of which you can say ‘yes, that’s it’. No matter the used material. The ‘yes’ is there or not. If no ‘yes’ comes alive it is not design at all. I think in photography there’s no other way possible too. Every photographer strives to a ‘yes’. I hope I succeeded today.

DAY 054 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – CERAMICS

CERAMICS

First of all I have to state that I love black and white images. I do love the square format too, based on my former experiences with my Hasselblad. Nowadays I am working with a small Fuji outfit. A new experience. Sometimes I fell back to the past. In my home I have a wonderful ceramic form shaped by Greta van Donk.

It is still present after a long time of years. And I still love it too. Especially when I switch on the lights and the shadows appear. The dreamy mountains take me away to some former mountain paths I climbed.

Nowadays I’m working at the street, however I don’t feel to be a street photographer. When and where possible I like to have a small talk to people and to photograph them. It happend to be a magic experience, because everybody has something to tell. People’s own stories are very interesting.

So, instead of photographing in my studio I now mostly work at daylight situations. Like the weddings I shot before. Photography is still exiting, day by day.

DAY 053 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – CHAGRINED?

However some figures seem to think different about flowers in common, I do like the flowers in the background. I met this Greek guy in the flowershop. Of course it is a statue, painted in silver. Looking at his lips, they hang down a little bit. Not a representative for all the Greek people I think. The silver in front and in the background the violet color present a special combination as the sunshine at the flowers reflect a silver gloss. The shop is called ‘The Temptation”. For me such flowers are like a falling star, so I bought them this saturday afternoon. Just before closing time. It seemed to me the Greek smiled a little bit. Maybe I’am wrong….

DAY 052 – 100 DAY JOURNAL – STRAWBERRY FIELDS

STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER

Today happend to be my kitchen-day. No regrets at all. With the Beatles in mind I had a wonderful time in my kitchen.

In this time of the year the first strawberries are available in the shops. I have to think about my good old friends as soon as I taste the new strawberries. Especially when this type of fruit has been cultivated in a biological way. The grower informed me about the great taste. So I tried it and the well known strophes came along:

Living is easy with eyes closed.

I closed my eyes and guess what happend…..
